CANSAT

Cansat is a secondary school physics project run by the European Space Agency. Students must design and build a satellite to fit in a standard coke can. They must complete a primary and secondary website.

ABOUT CANSAT

With Cansat students must create a satellite that can fit into a standard coke can. This satellite must meet the requirements set by the  European Space Agency. These requirements are separated into two categories, the primary mission and the secondary mission. This can is the shot into the air and the can must fall a constant speed until it hits the ground. It must transmit signals back to the students during flight and when it hits the ground.

JOURNEY TO THE AZORES

We are now working on our secondary mission and our parachute. We have just finished our Pre-Launch Report and are looking forward to having more time not to test the can and finishing off the mechanics of the can. We are also working on our community outreach. We had two guest speakers into the school over the past two weeks. The first of the guest speakers was trainee astronaut Dr. Norah Patten. The second speaker David Gibbons. David Gibbons is manager of ESA Space Solutions Centre Ireland. We look forward to furthering  our progress as we prepare for the European stage in the Azores.

PRIMARY MISSION

The team must build a CanSat and program it to accomplish the compulsory primary mission, as follows:

After release and during descent, the CanSat shall measure the following parameters and transmit the data as telemetry at least once every second to the ground station:

  • Air temperature

  • Air pressure

It must be possible for the team to analyse the data obtained (for example, make a calculation of altitude) and display it in graphs (for example, altitude vs. time and temperature vs. altitude).

I'm afraid we cannot reveal our secondary mission to you at this present moment in time because the competition is not over yet and we cannot reveal our secondary mission until competition day.
